J. Cole

Just caught this video over at The Smoking Section… One of our new favourites J. Cole speaks on producing records, his beatmaking inspirations, modern cratedigging, working alongside No I.D. for his debut and the current era of rap.

Check it out…

And if you don’t know about J. Cole…. You should definitely look him up.

He’s a North Carolina native who was the first rapper to be signed to Jay Z’s label ‘Roc Nation’ – I really only heard of the dude coz of his feature on A Star Is Born off Jay Z’s “The Blueprint 3.”

He also won the 2010 Underground Music Award for Male Artist of the Year for his highly acclaimed mixtape ‘The Warm Up,” has been named a “Rising Icon” by BET and is among the list of nominees for “Rookie of the Year” at the BET Hip Hop awards.

Anyways… We’ll be updating regularly until we get to hear his album at the end of year so keep checking back.

Peace,

Matt

Throwback Thursday XI

Really struggled to think of a song we wanted to do for this weeks Throwback Thursday, then Matt started singing “I hope tomorrow will bring, a better you, a better me…”!

Tevin Campbell was just 11 years old when he appeared on this song for Quincy Jones’ LP “Back On The Block” – The song hit number 1 on the R&B charts in June 1990.

Enjoy this classic!!!

“Tomorrow (Better you, Better me)” – written by Siedah Garrett/Louis Johnson/George Johnson

John Legend & The Roots – “Wake Up!”

So we’ve been hearing a few tracks from John Legend & The Roots popping up every now and then around the interwebs – but now the people at NPR are giving us the chance to listen to the entire album.

The stream will be up until ‘Wake Up’ is released on September 21st.

Enjoy,

Matt

McLovin’ – soon to be dubbed The Motherf*cker

Just saw this post over at soulculture about Kick Ass 2 the movie. If you haven’t seen the first one, you should – I guess I’m an undercover nerd so I thought it was awesome!

Red Mist
Anyways. Mark Millar, the creator of Kick Ass was interviewed at the launch night of the Russian Standard Vodka Originals Film Festival and described the idea behind Kick Ass 2.

“… it’s gangs going all over New York filming atrocities on their cell phones and putting them on the internet, trying to outdo each other, all at the behest of Red Mist. My idea for Red Mist was to introduce a supervillian that made Heath Ledger’s Joker look like Cesar Romero’s Joker. He’s basically Charles Manson as a supervillian.”

And… as for Christopher “McLovin” Mintz – apparently he doesn’t like the fact that everyone calls him McLovin so Mark Millar is making his character (Red Mist) call himself “The Motherfucker.” – I personally still kinda like McLovin’ but wateva.

Anyway, the movie comes out in 2012 so if you haven’t seen the first movie – you have plenty of time to catch up.

Peace,

Matt

Kendrick Lamar “Cut You Off”

It’s good to hear a great LA rapper again…

Kendrick Lamar’s “Overly Dedicated” comes out on Wednesday. He’s been releasing a whole lot of tracks online but if you haven’t heard any, this is a good place to start…

Gotta love the honesty/comedy. You should check the EP too while you’re at it.

Throwback Thursday X

This week we thought we might change it up a little bit coz we’ve been on the R&B buzz every other week… To be honest, when I was younger I really never listened to the Beatles at all even though my parents taste in music was so diverse. When I finally got in to listening and playing some of their songs, this one was a quick favourite (Yup that’s how we Kiwis spell favorite!).

I Want You (She’s So Heavy) – really doesn’t need much of a description… But it’s written by John and produced by George for “Abbey Road” in 1969.

Enjoy,
