Throwback Thursday X

This week we thought we might change it up a little bit coz we’ve been on the R&B buzz every other week… To be honest, when I was younger I really never listened to the Beatles at all even though my parents taste in music was so diverse. When I finally got in to listening and playing some of their songs, this one was a quick favourite (Yup that’s how we Kiwis spell favorite!).

I Want You (She’s So Heavy) – really doesn’t need much of a description… But it’s written by John and produced by George for “Abbey Road” in 1969.

Enjoy,

Throwback Thursday IX

A couple of weeks ago, we were lucky enough to attend the Grammy Block Party, which was a fundraiser for the Nashville flood relief. Good food, drink, ice cream & music in the sun – what more could you ask for!!! The final performance of the day was one of our favorites, Raphael Saadiq. His set was sick – and he topped it off with a medley of songs from some of his different groups over the years.

So this week we’re posting two throwbacks from Tony! Toni! Toné!

“If I Had No Loot” written by Juan Bautista, W.G. Harris & Raphael Saadiq (Wiggins back then) for Tony! Toni! Toné!’s 1993 album “Sons of Soul”

“Let’s Get Down” written by George Archie, David Blake & Raphael Saadiq for their 1996 album “House of Music”

Enjoy,

Matt

Throwback Thursday VIII

So a couple of weeks ago we were at The Conga Room for Foxxhole Mondays, which we try to get to every couple of weeks – and someone got up and sang “Breakin’ My Heart” by Mint Condition. Always loved this song and if you haven’t heard it then take the time to listen. Mint Condition playing live is something that all R&B lovers should go see. so if you’re in San Francisco at the start of September you should go see them at Yoshi’s.

The song Breakin My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) is from Mint Condition’s 1991 album Meant To Be Mint.

It was written by Jeff Allen, Stokley Williams & Larry Waddell and I believe it was produced By Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (and probably the band themselves).

Enjoy,

Matt

Kanye’s back!

I’ve been waiting to hear what else Kanye was going to release before getting excited – but after catching these videos on Perez’s blog this morning, it seems like we might actually get the real Kanye back!

Apparently Kanye was having a meeting with Mark Zuckerburg and decided to do a quick show at the facebook headquarters in Palo Alto.

Even though it’s all acapella you can hear that the lyrics have depth, he’s gotten off the singing buzz and he even threw in some Friday – Smokey & Deebo references that you gotta love!

Can’t wait to hear the album ‘Good Ass Job’ that should be coming out mid September.

Enjoy,

Matt

Ski Beatz Feat Mos Def – ‘Cream of the Planet’

I know we haven’t posted in a real long time, but I had to post this coz Mos Def is a beast. We’ll fill you in on what’s been happening and get back to the regular posts this coming week but in the meantime….

We’ve been waiting for a minute for Ski Beatz 24 Hr Karate School – Apparently Sept. 7th is when we can get more than just snippets and previews.

“Listen, life is fantastic, beautiful and tragic. Plain, classic”

Out of My Mind. Just in Time?

I feel compelled to say a few words about Erykah Badu’s new album New Amerykah part 2. This highly anticipated album is a follow up to a very complex, politically and socially driven New Amerykah Part 1. This album has more of a sitting in a smoke filled lounge sort of feel than Part 1 (and we’re probably not talking tobacco). It contains long grooves and a romantic feel making one recall earlier Badu tracks such as “Orange Moon” in Mama’s gun. You can hear harp strings, a Theremin, and acoustic drums in this album making it sound somewhat analog and slightly different from her previous albums.
The first single released was “Window Seat” and in my humble opinion it is the best track on the album. It features the incomparable ?uestlove on drums. If you live under a rock he is from The Roots (get familiar). “Jump up in the Air (Stay there)” is not only a fantastic name for a song but another interesting track on the album that features appearances by Lil Wayne and Bilal. Producers on Part two include 9th Wonder and Madlib among many others.
Also noteworthy about this album is the stunning artwork that is displayed on the cover. It is often a detail that is overlooked by artists and distributors. This album artwork shows a beautiful, detailed depiction of Erykah herself.

Oh, and my favorite lines/make you giggle and feel warm inside moments on the album?

On “Out of my Mind Just in Time (Part 2)”…
“I’m a recovering undercover over-lover, recovering from a love I cant get over. A recovering undercover over-lover. And now my common law lover thinks he wants another.”

On “Fall in Love” she casually warns..
“You’re loving me and I’m driving your Benz/ You’re loving me and I’m f@%$ing your friends.”

WTH is a Theremin you ask?

Updates

So we’ve been pretty slack with the whole blog thing – mainly because we’ve had a lot of writing, recording, organizing and of course – learning to do… but The Rebel Movement LLC is all set up, registered and ready to take over the world (in the voice of the Brain – always loved Pinky and the Brain, especially the theme song).

Anosha Pic

Anyway, here’s the deal… Anosha – our first artist is  in the middle of recording her EP, which we’ll be updating everyone on over the next couple of weeks. We’ve also decided to record some free stuff to give away as a thank-you to all the friends and fans so we’ll be posting it on Anosha’s facebook page as well as the TRM facebook page – and of course you can get it here and at Anoshaworld (Nosh’s blog site)… Just so you know, for every 1000 fans Anosha gets on facebook, we’ll write, record and giveaway a free song – so you should mos def suggest her to your friends to get the freebies!

Here’s the free download for Anosha’s first 1000 fans – it’s called Lesson.
(Click the down arrow on the right to download)

Throwback Thursday VII

Alright… It’s that time again and I thought I would post something that really isn’t that old but needs to be done.

Usher recently released his new album and although I haven’t heard the whole thing yet, the tracks I did hear were boring and generic as hell – but let’s not forget he is an amazing singer and performer. Hopefully we’ll get to see that again soon with some new releases or something…

Anyways to remind you how sick he was/is, here’s Usher’s – You Make Me Wanna.

The track was released in 1997 on his album “My Way” by LaFace records and produced by the one and only Jermaine Dupri

Enjoy Responsibly
